Organizing products with category hierarchy
Product Categories
Categories help organize your product catalog into logical groupings.
Category Structure
Categories form a hierarchical tree:
└── Root
├── Raw Materials
│ ├── Metals
│ ├── Plastics
│ └── Electronics
├── Finished Goods
│ ├── Widgets
│ └── Assemblies
└── Services
├── Installation
└── MaintenanceThe Categories page shows the tree on the left and the products in the selected category on the right.
Managing Categories
Creating Categories
- Go to Products > Categories
- Click Create Category to add a root category, or open a category's menu in the tree and choose Create Category to add a subcategory
- Enter category details:
- Name - Category display name (must be unique)
- Description - Optional description
- Save
Editing Categories
- Open the category's menu in the tree
- Choose Update Category
- Modify the name or description and save
Deleting Categories
- Open the category's menu in the tree
- Choose Delete Category
- Confirm
Deleting a category also deletes all of its subcategories. Products in the deleted categories are not removed — they become uncategorized.
Category Best Practices
Hierarchy Depth
- Recommended: 2-3 levels
- Deeper hierarchies become unwieldy
Naming Conventions
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Raw Materials | Materials_Raw_v2 |
| Finished Goods | FG |
| Installation Services | IS-01 |
Organization Tips
- Group by function - What the product does
- Or by type - Material composition
- Avoid overlap - Each product fits one category
- Plan for growth - Leave room for expansion
Using Categories
Each product can be assigned to one category. Use the category tree to browse the catalog and review the products in each category.
